Patch choice decisions of wild blackbirds: the role of preharvest public information

Article Abstract:

Research describing blackbird feeding patch choice decisions is presented. It is shown that blackbirds are not influenced in their choice of patch by the behavior of other blackbirds.

Testing the mass-dependent predation hypothesis: in European blackbirds poor foragers have higher overwinter body reserves

Article Abstract:

The link between the foraging rates and the body masses of wintering European blackbirds is studied. Individuals with the lowest foraging rates had the largest gain in mass for the winter and had relatively high mass overall, independent of age and sex.

Temporal prey distribution affects the competitive ability of parasitized sticklebacks

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on the foraging of parasite-infected and uninfected three-spined sticklebacks, Gasterosteus aculeatus, to examine the effect of temporal distribution on the competitive ability of the specie. Nonparasitized sticklebacks were found to be more successful at taking a prey items when they are presented simultaneously in a locally dense patch. Results also suggested poor competitive ability causes infection rather than the other way around.
