The PIE-1 protein and germline specification in C. elegans embryos

Article Abstract:

The maternal gene pie-1 of Caenorhabditis elegans encodes the protein PIE-1 which is present in the totipotent germline blastomeres throughout early development of the embryo. PIE-1 initially links itself with both centrosomes of the mitotic spindle during the division of each germline blastomere. It disappears from the centrosome of the somatic daughter blastomere, but persists in the centrosome of the new germline blastomere. The localization and genetic features of pie-1 are similar to repressor-based mechanisms which maintain the pluripotency within a stem cell lineage.

Repression of gene expression in the embryonic germ lineage of C. elegans

Article Abstract:

Gene expression in the early embryonic germline of Caenorhabditis elegans is inhibited by the protein PIE-1. The asymmetrical division of the embryonic germline blastomeres forms a somatic and a germline daughter. Embryonically transcribed RNAs are seen only in the somatic blastomeres after each asymmetrical division. However, the absence of PIE-1 results in RNA transcription in both the somatic and the germline blastomeres. The abnormal expression of PIE-1 in somatic cells reduces the amount of RNA transcripts in the cells.

Exclusion of germ plasm proteins from somatic lineages by cullin-dependent degradation

Article Abstract:

A study is conducted to demonstrate that germ plasm asymmetry also depends on degradation of germline proteins in non-germline cells. Segregation of the germ plasm involving both stabilization of germline proteins in the germ line and cullin-dependent in the soma are proposed.
