The business of research

Article Abstract:

Plerou and colleagues have provided a quantitative study of the academic research system which found that the growth dynamics of universities in the US are similar to those of business companies. These similarities may indicate that the economization of fundamental research has been pushed too far in certain Western countries. Five different measures of research activity were found, and it was noted that the growth in research activity does not rely on the size of R&D expenditure in the same way that businesses are subject to universal growth mechanisms.

Anomalous or mass-independent isotope effects

Article Abstract:

A number of chemical researchers have highlighted the assumption that mass-independent isotope effects are merely by-products of experimental artifacts. These conclusions, however, may be deemed baseless and illogical since isotopic exchange has long been established as an interplay of kinetic and equilibrium effects. One of the most interesting researches confirming the existence of mass-independent isotope effects was done by Sehested et al., who utilized samples of oxygen atoms generated from the radiolysis of carbon dioxide.

Firing up heavy industry

Article Abstract:

The industrial sector in Georgia has been badly affected by the collapse of the Soviet Union. It is now recognized that privatization and foreign investment will be the two most direct ways of modernizing this sector. There are plans for the partial privatization of 50 companies, with others to be launched on the open market after restructuring. Efforts are also being made to attract foreign investors. There has already been very strong interest in the transit of Caspian oil and in operating the Euro-Asian transport corridor.
