The rising risks of rising tides

Article Abstract:

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) foresees a sea level rise of 3 to 11 inches up to 2030 AD and cautions coastal nations to implement comprehensive strategies of coastal-zone management by 2000. Rise in sea levels due to global warming is responsible for ecological problems such as coastal erosion, inland flooding and saltwater intrusions, and intense developments in coastal areas only add to this grave situation. The Coastal Zone Management Subgroup of the IPCC extends institutional and financial aid to coastal and island states to help them cope with the rising sea.

The infectiousness of pompous prose

Article Abstract:

The dense and indecipherably overinflated prose that abounds in scientific journals and papers could be avoided by leaving out superfluous words and by making written English as much like the spoken tongue as possible. Scientists have long tended to produce turgid writing, probably because they are more interested in being cited than in being read and because too many editors are themselves scientists. However, with a determined effort even scientists can write clearly and naturally.
