The delayed rise of present-day mammals

Article Abstract:

A species-level phylogeny of nearly all extant Mammalia is constructed and analyzed to determine whether the end-Cretaceous mass extinction event triggered the evolutionary radiation of 21st century mammals. Results show that the phylogenetic 'fuses' leading to the explosion of extant placental orders are not only very much longer than expected, but also challenge the hypothesis that the end-Cretaceous mass extinction event had a major influence on the diversification of 21st century's mammals.

Global distribution and conservation of rare and threatened vertebrates

Article Abstract:

Global distribution data is used to study overall distribution of species, especially rare and threatened species. The global distribution data of 19,349 living birds, mammals and amphibians shows that although the distribution of overall species richness is very similar among these groups, congruence in the distribution of rare and threatened species is lower and results indicate that silver-bullet conservation strategies will not deliver efficient conservation solutions.

Global hotspots of species richness are not congruent with endemism or threat

Article Abstract:

Biodiversity hotspots play a prominent role in biology conservation but it still remains controversial to what extent the different hotspots are congruent. A global database on the breeding distribution of all known birds is used to test the congruence of three hotspots, consequently as different types of hotspots vary in their unity as conversation tools.
