The evolution of virulence

Article Abstract:

The evolution of virulence of animal parasites based on the degree of dependence of parasite reproductive success on the host is discussed. A particular study on the direct life-cycle nematodes (Parasitodiplogaster spp.), each one specifically infecting one of 11 Panamanian wasp species belonging to Pegoscapus spp. or Tetrapus spp., demonstrated that the likely mode of transmission determines the correlates with parasite virulence in natural populations.

The purple patch

Article Abstract:

Reports by Andersson and colleagues and Hunt and colleagues show that blue tits are sexually dichromatic. The Andersson report is based on the use of reflectance spectrophotometry which measured the colour of the birds' crown feathers. Sexes were shown to differ significantly in spectral shape around the ultraviolet. Hunt and colleagues measured colour for ten areas of the body, finding that spectral shape was dimorphic in half of them.

Mosaic evolution of brain structure in mammals

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning an analysis of the importance of mosaic changes in the evolution of the brain. The difference in volume size of the neocortex in insectivores and mammals is discussed.
