The long and the short of it..

Article Abstract:

The ultimate timescale of quantum cosmology-approximately 10(super -43)s, the big bang's birth-flash-is an elementary grain or pixel of time, within which normal physics of four-dimensional space and time breaks down into much greater number of dimensions as hypothesized by the 'superstring' theory. The record for the shortest laser pulses stands at 4-5 of a cycle of a near-infrared laser.

Optical microcavities

Article Abstract:

The author reviews the publications on optical microcavities which confine light to small volumes via resonant recirculation. The topics of interest include the analysis of strong-coupling quantum electro-dynamics, suppression and enhancement of spontaneous emission.

A fast low-power optical memory based on coupled micro-ring lasers

Article Abstract:

Ring lasers with extremely small size and low operating power are made, and a memory element constructed by interconnecting these microscopic lasers is demonstrated. Simulations show that the element has the potential for much smaller dimensions and switching times.
