The magnetic field and internal structure of Ganymede

Article Abstract:

Doppler shift of radio signals from Galileo spacecraft reveal the differentiation of the internal structure of Ganymede with ice surrounding the dense core. The intrinsic magnetic field of Ganymede has an antiparallel alignment with that of Jupiter. These facts suggest the presence of an outer silicate core surrounding a liquid inner core of iron or iron sulphide. Thus a dynamo action within the metallic core generates the magnetic field. Similarly, Io also has a metallic core that generates magnetic field antiparallel to that of Jupiter through magnetoconvection.

Detection of an impact-generated dust cloud around Ganymede

Article Abstract:

Dust in the Solar System is concentrated in the ring systems around the giant planets and over the place of the planetary orbits. In situ measurements of submicrometre dust within a few radii of Jupiter's satellite Ganymede, are reported. The directions, speeds and distribution of masses of the grain are consistent with an ejection process due to hypervelocity impacts of interplanetary dust on the surface of Ganymede.

Icing Ganymede

Article Abstract:

Issues are presented concerning the physical features which cause the young ice to form on the surface of the planet Jupiter's moon Ganymede. The influence of volcanic and tectonic events on the creation of the ice is discussed.
