The oncoprotein Evi-1 represses TGF-beta signalling by inhibiting Smad3

Article Abstract:

A zinc finger protein with possible involvement in leukaemic transformation of haematopoietic cells is encoded by Evi-1. An investigation was undertaken on the effects of Evi-1 on signalling through transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta). Evi-1 is shown to repress TGF-beta signalling and antagonize the growth-inhibitory effects, defining a new function of Evi-1 as a signalling repressor through TGF-beta.

Dishevelled controls cell polarity during Xenopus gastrulation

Article Abstract:

Xenopus dishevelled (Xdsh) is known to play many roles during embryogenesis and its inhibition disrupts convergent extension movements during gastrulation. New research using time-lapse confocal microscopy shows that failure of convergent extension in cells lacking Xdsh is due to defects in cell polarity.

WNT signalling molecules act in axis formation in the diploblastic metazoan Hydra

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the function of the Wnt/wingless secreted proteins in the long-range organization and short-range inducement of tumorigenesis, organogenesis and axis formation in developing tissues.
