The ontogeny of social behaviour among juvenile Caribbean spiny lobsters

Article Abstract:

The social interaction involving formation of groups may affect the timing and nature of ontogenetic habitat shift in juvenile Caribbean spiny lobsters, Panulirus argus. Transitional and postalgal lobsters show more locomotory activity than algal lobsters. Postalgal lobsters spend less time in algal cover unlike the algal lobsters. The existence of conspecifics affects the activity pattern and the use of algal cover among postalgal lobsters. Activity patterns of lobsters and their responses to conspecifics vary from algal to postalgal phases.

Predation risk, gender and the group size effect: does elk vigilance depend upon the behavior of conspecifics?

Article Abstract:

The individual and group vigilance of Rocky Mountain elk called Cervus elaphus was compared in three regions that varied in their encounter frequency with coyote called Canis latrans, grizzly bear, Ursus arctos and grey wolf called Canis lupus. Depending on the composition of the herd, these age-sex class differences led to significant differences in the group vigilance.

The guide effect influence on the gregariousness of juvenile Caribbean spiny lobsters

Article Abstract:

Research into den finding and den sharing by young Caribbean spiny lobsters, Panulirus argus, is presented. There was found to be no difference in survival between solitary lobsters and those tethered with conspecifics. There were similar survival levels among lobsters in high- and low-density locations.
