The prodigal fish

Article Abstract:

It has been established that some of the larvae of reef fish remain near where they are spawned, settling back onto the island reefs inhabited by the parents rather than being washed away by ocean currents. This research showed that the larvae of the Caribbean bluehead wrasse frequently spend their planktonic lives close to shore. This conclusion was reached on the basis of extremely small chemical tags that accumulate inside the otolith. The researchers measured the elemental content of otoliths collected from settling wrasse larvae in the US Virgin Islands to determine where larvae had drifted.

Germ theory for ailing corals

Article Abstract:

The coral reef ecosystem is declining due to the various human activities, which has resulted in the environmental degradation. The researchers feel that the germ theory that was proposed for the human disease in the 1870s can help these coral reefs from further damage.

In the market for minke whales

Article Abstract:

Genetic capture-recapture method is developed to estimate how many accidentally killed minke whales reach the markets of South Korea. Forensic identification of whale products has shown that reforms of rules for the legal sale of accidentally killed animals are needed.
