The view from the North

Article Abstract:

The University of Tromso sits at 70 degrees north latitude on Norway's northwest coast. Though the location of this northernmost university makes it unattractive to many potential students and faculty, the university has grown to accommodate 5,000 students and 400 research workers. Much of the research conducted there takes advantage of the school's arctic location, studying meteorological and climate conditions peculiar to the region. Norway's likely participation in the EC will foster cooperation with other European investigators.

Technology dodging the cuts

Article Abstract:

Finland's Technology Development Center (TEKES) has been granted a 10% increase in its budget despite the general reduction in research and other public spending by the Finish government. TEKES and the Technical Research Center (VTT) have promoted technical research over the last decade. Finnish technical research will become more international in scope if Finland elects to participate in the European Commission's Framework program.
