The writing is on the web for science journals in print

Article Abstract:

The traditional roles of research libraries are being eroded as publishers and new electronic services bypass them and deliver information products straight to the users. Publishers also face challenges as evidence indicates that maintaining high cost, low circulation journals as the main method of scientific communication, is not the best way to meet user needs. It is acknowledged that the traditional role of journals as a distribution outlet will diminish, as the Internet blurs the roles of creators, suppliers and distributors. There is demand for sophisticated new products and market pressure for 'one-stop shopping'.

British BSE reckoning tells a dismal tale

Article Abstract:

Clear evidence is emerging at the inquiry into the management of the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) epidemic that the UK government failed to respond adequately to the danger of BSE being transmitted to humans. Warnings went unheeded because of a false sense of security created by the fact that scrapie has never been transmitted to humans. The inquiry has already received more than 500 submissions of evidence, and is expected to hear around 400 individuals.
