Time to take the plunge at Yucca Mountain: The process from which the Nevada desert has emerged as the only candidate site for disposal of US high-level nuclear waste has been flawed. But the result may still be a safe repository

Article Abstract:

Yucca Mountain in Nevada has emerged as a suitable site for the disposal of high level nuclear waste produced by civil and military nuclear programmes. The waste could be placed far below the surface and above the water table, and the site is being assessed. There is political pressure for an outcome as the DoE can offer not alternative, but the process by which the mountain was chosen is not perfect, although opponents have failed to offer an alternative to the problem of nuclear waste.

Cheaters in yucca/moth mutualism

Article Abstract:

Morphological, behavioral and phenological differences exist between yucca moths without maxillary tentacles and normal yucca moths. Yucca moths without maxillary tentacles do not function as pollinators since they do not collect or carry or transfer pollen, nor do they approach stigmas of fresh flowers. Non-pollinators experience relatively low larval mortality since they oviposit in fruit rather than flowers, thus having a greater impact on seed production than do pollinators.
