The animal rights movement must be realistic and align with the animal welfarist groups. Failure to do so will result in public opinion that purists are fanatics. Change comes slowly, and only within the last century has cruelty to animals been a crime.

Let them eat roadkill

A state law legalizing the eating of animal roadkills has been proposed in Tennessee. This is a better option than the practice of killing live animals for human consumption.
