Trade, Tenure, and Tradition: Influence of Sociocultural Factors on Resource Use in Melanesia

Article Abstract:

The depletion of live branching coral in Melanesia's Manus Province is linked to the production of lime powder used in betel nut consumption. Sustainable production under current common-property regimes is vulnerable to a lapse in supply; management interventions that incorporate resource conservation and regional economic needs are required.
