Trench-parallel flow and seismic anisotropy in the Mariana and Andean subduction systems

Article Abstract:

A fully three-dimensional non-newtonian subduction zone model is described which demonstrates the strong curve of the Mariana slab and the transition to shallow slap dip in the Southern Andes leading to strong trench parallel stretching in the warm-arc and warm-back-arc mantle. It is also demonstrated that the major three-dimensional flow by along-strike variations in slab geometry can cause the trends of shear-wave splitting seen in the Mariana and southern Andean systems.

Greatness thrust upon them

Article Abstract:

New research has indicated that the ultimate size of a seismic rupture of all big and small earthquakes is largely controlled by the structure of the underlying fault. The frequency content would identify an earthquake that could grow large and the structure of the fault would identify the likely end-point of the rupture.

Roots of the matter

Article Abstract:

New interpretations of seismological data may go a long way toward reconciling the different theories on the depth of Earth's tectosphere. The use of seismic tomography, similar to use and purpose of medical tomography, provide images that indicate a thick root to the contintal shields.
