Triclosan targets lipid synthesis

Article Abstract:

It has been shown that triclosan, a broad-spectrum antibacterial and antifungal agent, acts on a specific bacterial target, rather than as a non-specific biocide. Research involving isolating five independent triclosan-resistant mutants of Escherichia coli K12 strain AG100 with different levels of resistance on LB agar plates containing a trichlorinated diphenyl ether indicates that triclosan blocks lipid synthesis in E. coli. This blockage can be prevented by mutations in, or overexpression of, the gene fabI. Organisms that are intrinsically resistant to triclosan could contain triclosan-insensitive enoyl reductases.

Removal of phospho-head groups of membrane lipids immobilizes voltage sensors of [K.sup.+] channels

Article Abstract:

The significance of the phospho-head of the membrane lipids for the proper functioning of the voltage sensors of [K.sup.+] channels is discussed. The findings show that the enzymatic removal of the phospho-heads leads to the immobilization of the voltage sensors and hence raising the energy barrier for the downstream step.
