Tunnelling techniques hold key to prospects for giant accelerator

Article Abstract:

Advancements in tunnelling technology will be utilized by the researchers of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory for the construction of the Pipetron tunnel. The Pipetron is an accelerator ring with a 1,000-kilometer circumference that is expected to generate energy that is 10 times higher than the Large Hadron Collider that is being developed by European researchers. Furthermore, the Pipetron team plans to utilize remote-controlled tunnel cutters and innovative microtunneling techniques for the construction of the hadron accelerator.

SSC falls victim to congressional austerity

Article Abstract:

The US government is planning to cut down its budget spending on science, which would lead to the cancellation of the project of the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC). The U.S. congress is in favor of building an international space station, and the supporters of the SSC will have to chose between the space station and the SSC. The cancellation of the SSC will result in a loss of $1.5 billion, but the space station has the advantage of employing 75,000 people, which will win it the congressional support.

White House backs US contribution to LHC

Article Abstract:

The US is expected to contribute $530 million for the building of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at the European particle physics laboratory, CERN, in Geneva, Switzerland. About $200 million has been earmarked by the Dept of Energy for the LHC construction, while $250 million will be spent on its two detectors. The support has been confirmed upon the Office of Management and Budget's approval of the Energy Dept's proposed 1998 budget for high-energy and nuclear physics.
