Type ID unconventional myosin controls left-right asymmetry in Drosophila

Article Abstract:

The molecular nature of the determinants responsible for the invariant orientation of the left-right axis remains largely unknown and mutations producing a complete reversal of left-right asymmetry are instrumental for identifying mechanisms controlling handedness, yet only one such mutation is found in mice and snails. Thus, the conserved type ID unconventional myosin 31DF gene as a unique situs inversus locus in Drosophila is identified.

A dynamic role for the mushroom bodies in promoting sleep in Drosophila

Article Abstract:

A screen of GAL4 lines in the fruitfly, Drosophila melanogaster is performed, expressing a temperature-sensitive synaptic blocker shibire in a range of discrete neural circuits and the amount of sleep at different temperatures is assayed. Three short-sleep lines were identified at the restrictive temperature with shared expression in the mushroom bodies, a neural locus central to learning and memory.

An unconventional myosin in Drosophila reverses the default handedness in visceral organs

Article Abstract:

The internal organs of animals often have left-right asymmetry, and, though the formation of the anterior-posterior and dorsal-ventral axes in Drosophila is well understood, left-right asymmetry has not been extensively studied. It is found that the handedness of the embryonic gut and the adult gut and testes is reversed in viable and fertile homozygous Myo31DF mutants.
