UK research councils claim success for open-access publishing plan

Article Abstract:

Britain's main public funders for research have come up with a policy that will please both sides of the debate over open-access publishing. Opponents of the current system of scientific publishing have called for all publicly funded research to be made available in free-to-access journals or archives whereas supporters of open access are claiming victory in the wake of rules drawn up by Britain's research councils.

UK experts map out route to licensing transgenic crops

Article Abstract:

The expert panel, chaired by the UK government's chief scientific advisor David King, reported that there are no human-health grounds for holding up the planting of transgenic crops in Britain. The report released on July 21 2003 includes, findings of crops' economic impact and a public consultation involving 500 meetings held around the world.

Transgenic planting approved despite scepticism of UK public

Article Abstract:

The British government took a vital step towards the acceptance of genetically modified crops. Farmers will be keen about the first plantings, based on the prediction that the necessary rules will be in place for farmers to plant transgenic maize in spring 2005.
