US energy department backs down on plan for A-bomb victim studies

Article Abstract:

The US Department of Energy (DoE) has decided not to remove the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) from the management of the US portion of the Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF) in Hiroshima, Japan, which carries out studies on radiation victims of the atomic bomb in Japan. The decision of the DoE to shift the management of RERF from NAS to a US university or group of universities announced in 1995 was criticized by US and Japanese researchers at RERF. The DoE has accepted RERF Science Council's demand for a review of the RERF activities by external experts.

ESA avoids split over space station plans...

Article Abstract:

European Space Agency (ESA) averted the shutdown of its space programmes with financial help from France and Germany, which laid some preconditions on their aid. The financed projects, including the development of an automated transfer vehicle, under the new agreement necessitate ESA to cut down its running costs per annum of ECU 170 million by 12% and decrease the staff to 3000 till 2000 AD. Effects of these new agreements on the space research programmes of France, Germany and ESA are discussed.
