US government and utilities revive California solar project

Article Abstract:

The US Dept of Energy has approved the reconstruction of one of the world's largest solar power plants located in Barstow, CA. Dubbed as the Solar Two project, the plant stands to benefit from an increase in budget for solar energy research proposed by Pres Bill Clinton for fiscal year 1994. The $39 million project cost will be split between the Dept of Energy and an industrial consortium led by Southern California Edison Co. The plant is scheduled to become operational by 1996 with hopes of generating commercial quantities of electricity by 1998.

California looks to science partnerships...

Article Abstract:

California needs partnerships between local government, science, and industry, to continue the recovery following its longest recession since World War II. The California Coalition for Science and Technology Summit failed to reach a consensus on ways to strengthen its science and technology base, currently focused on biotechnology, computers and entertainment. Proposed cuts in the research activities of the federal government will affect the state, which gets one quarter of the present federal research and development spending.
