US panel backs new approach to risk

Article Abstract:

The National Research Council (NRC) has proposed a method for the assessment of public-health and environmental risks that involves discussion between scientists and the public prior to a formal assessment. The plan has been proposed in the Understanding Risks: Informing Decisions in a Democratic Society report published by NRC. The method has been criticized by industrial organizations as they feel that public opinion might overshadow scientific assessment. Government officials are troubled over the level of integration between the public and scientists proposed in the method.

White House science office 'needs more focus', says panel

Article Abstract:

The Carnegie Commission, set up to advise the US president on science and technology, has said that the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) should focus on fewer policy issues. The Commission has also suggested in its memorandum that a chief of staff should be appointed to allow the OSTP's director Jack Gibbons to have greater and more frequent interaction with the president's senior officials.
