Understanding the valency of rare earths from first-principles theory

Article Abstract:

It has been possible to use ab initio electronic-structure methods to make a systematic theoretical analysis of the rare-earth elements and their sulphides. This approach allows both the bonding s-d electrons and the f electrons to be described on an equal basis. It was established that both elemental rare earths and their sulphides progress in a similar way as a function of atomic number. There seems to be a direct connection between the difference in the number of the less well localized f electrons and the difference in energy between the two valence states.

Magnetic trapping of rare-earth atoms at millikelvin temperatures

Article Abstract:

Studies done on the non-S-state rare-earth atoms that show collisional reorientation of angular momentumin in such atoms is highly suppressed is reported. The results of the study are promising for the creation of quantum degenerate gases with non-S-state atoms, and facilitate the search for time variation of fundamental constants and the development of a quantum computer with highly magnetic atoms.

Lanthanide contraction and magnetism in the heavy rare earth elements

Article Abstract:

A unified magnetic phase diagram that links the magnetic structures of the heavy rare earths to their lattice parameters is generated. The results reveal that the atomic unit cell volume plays a separate, distinct role in determining the magnetic properties.
