University of California forms company to develop technology from its laboratories

Article Abstract:

The University of California (UC) may start a profit-making venture for developing and licensing the inventions of its researchers. UC would own 51% of Technology Development Corp and hopes to realize gross royalty income of $222 million by the year 2001. Of that amount, the University itself would retain one third. Currently UC receives more royalty money than any other US university, reaping $29 million in 1992. Its most profitable invention is the process for splicing genes, for which it shares the patent with Stanford University.

US laboratories escape a radical overhaul

Article Abstract:

Bill Clinton determined that requiring Lawrence Livermore, Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories to use private industry cost saving reorganization techniques was more effective both economically and for public confidence than consolidation or privatization. The trend in research funding is toward basic research with any programs having industrial applications being funded by industry sources. A $25 million to $75 million cut has been requested from the $875 million research budget.
