Up close and personal to atoms

Article Abstract:

The scanning tunnelling microscope, developed in the early 1980s, has had a significant impact on subsequent developments in microscope technology. It has formed the basis for other nanometre-scale imaging techniques that do not depend on vacuum tunnelling, but still show the interaction of a pointed probe with the sample. These new instruments are known jointly as scanning probe microscopes. Among these, the most extensively used is the atomic force microscope, which maps the forces between the tip and the sample. Imaging with scanning probe microscopes has allowed interaction with single atoms, molecules and molecular assemblies.

One dimensional tunnel reactivity in catalysis with the scanning tunneling microscope

Article Abstract:

The scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) was used to study carbon monoxide oxidation on an oxygen covered rhodium-110 surface. Samples of rhodium-110 were subjected to 5 langmuirs of oxygen while a level of 650 K was maintained. STM images show oxygen-induced reconstruction along with highdensity step edges, terraces and domain boundaries. These results indicate that carbon monoxide eliminates one-dimensional oxygen atoms. This results demonstrate the importance of STM in observing surface reaction microkinetics.

Watching an atom tunnel

Article Abstract:

Issues are presented concerning the observations which have been made of the movement of hydrogen atoms at temperatures of 9 Kelvin across the surface of copper. Scanning tunnelling microscopy was used in the research.
