Laser light splits atom

Article Abstract:

Independent research teams have used powerful lasers at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in the UK and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in the US to split the uranium atom. This is a key development in efforts to identify what occurs when matter interacts with the highest electromagnetic field strengths of light. It has been possible to demonstrate that, if gamma rays are sufficiently energetic, they can perturb the delicate stability of heavy nuclei, prompting a split into lighter elements and neutrons in a process known as photonuclear fission.

Experimental observation of relativistic nonlinear Thomson scattering

Article Abstract:

Ultrahigh-peak-power lasers provide a way of creating large photon densities needed to study relativistic or nonlinear Thomson scattering. Such an approach has been used to provide experimental confirmation of the theoretical predictions of relativistic Thomson scattering. A future goal is to achieve coherent harmonics generation, which could be used in table-top X-ray sources.
