Updated distribution of the Lower Keys marsh rabbit

Article Abstract:

A survey was conducted in Lower Keys, Florida, to update the distribution and occupancy status of Lower Keys marsh rabbit (LKMR, Sylvilagus palustris hefneri) habitat patches and to compare data with previous surveys. A reduction in the number of occupied patches was found, indicating a risk to LKMR due to demographic and environmental stochasticity.

Population density of the endangered Florida Key deer

Article Abstract:

Studies conducted to obtain current population methods of Florida Key deer and for outlining a protocol for future monitoring are discussed. Findings reveal that all the three methods, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) road survey data, and mortality data, and mark-recapture data, can be used for monitoring changes in the density of Key deer.

Hurricane impacts on Key deer in the Florida Keys

Article Abstract:

Studies on Florida Key deer (Odocoileus virginanus clavium) populations show that Category 1 and 2 hurricanes have little influence on deer survival, but hurricanes classified as Category 3 or higher may significantly affect survival. Topics studied include potable water availability and deer movement patterns.
