Elk and hunter space-use sharing in South Dakota

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the disturbance caused to elk populations in the southern Black Hills, SD, by hunters. The use of Volume of Intersection Indices in general linear regression models is discussed.

Validation tests of a spatially explicit habitat effectiveness model for Rocky Mountain elk

Article Abstract:

A model is presented for predicting Rocky Mountain elk habitat utilization distributions, basing effectiveness on seasonal variation in quantity, quality and availability of forage. The model was found to perform with greater accuracy during the autumn for elk sub-herds which were not negatively affected by fire.

Effects of sample size on kernel home range estimates

Article Abstract:

Wildlife researchers increasingly use kernel methods to estimate home range, but it is not known whether sample size affects their accuracy. A new study uses computer simulations of 10-200 points/home range and compares them with estimates using kernel methods. Details of the study are presented.
