Variations on the theme of movement

Article Abstract:

Chemomechanical coupling necessary for kinesin-mediated cell motility may exist in more than one form. Laura Romberg and Ronald D. Vale examined how adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and nucleotide analogues affect motility and discovered that the microtubules slow down and separate from the cell surface when the ratio of ADP to adenosine triphosphate is less than one-to-one. Current theories as to how the actomyosin system functions may have to be revised in light of these findings.

Control of CFTR chloride conductance by ATP levels through non-hydrolytic binding

Article Abstract:

Intracellular levels of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) must remain within normal limits for the sweat ducts to produce large amounts of cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) the genetic defect of which causes the disease cystic fibrosis. CFTR normally functions as a phosphorylation-induced small-conductance chloride channel. ATP's association with chloride channel activity through CFTR may prevent too great an expenditure of energy from injuring tissue.
