What bright prosperity for Europe?

Article Abstract:

Observers at a conference on a strategy for research in Europe held in Paris, France, expressed concern over the rapid decrease in funding of research projects in Europe. Market exploitation due to cheap labor by Far Eastern countries and tremendous growth in the gross domestic product (GDP) rate of Far-Eastern countries such as China, South Korea and Taiwan as compared to GDP growth rates of the European countries were discussed. The possibility of an outbreak of social unrest due to growing unemployment and deprivation was also discussed. The need for introducing innovative measures for improving the European economy was emphasized.

Europe ambivalent on biotechnology

Article Abstract:

A survey conducted by a European biotechnology action group finds that there is a widespread distrust of modern biotechnology through Europe, particularly of genetic applications. The Eurobarometer survey of 1996 shows that there is reduced optimism among the public about the usefulness of genetic engineering and biotechnology research. Respondents are shown to have a widespread lack of trust in their governments to regulate modern biotechnology and prefer regulation by either international organizations, such as the World Health Organization, or scientific bodies.

Britain's discord on Europe's money

Article Abstract:

UK fails to agree with the decisions of the Intergovernmental Conference of the European Union, with the ruling Conservative party being reluctant to accept the European policy and UK's adoption of the proposed common currency for Western Europe. UK politicians opine that the unresolved political and technical issues associated with having a common currency will not allow the currency to be adopted in 1997, the first date mentioned in the Maastricht Treaty.
