What experience is required for acquiring tool competence? Experiments with two callitrichids

Article Abstract:

Cottontop tamarin subadults with only minimal experimental experiences, and no experience with tools or tool-like tasks are tested and also subadult common marmosets Callithrix jacchus is tested. Results indicate that in the absence of any experience, neither tamarins nor marmosets are able to discriminate between functionally relevant and irrelevant features of a tool.

Tool manufacture by naive juvenile crows

Article Abstract:

It has been shown that hand-raised juvenile New Caledonian crows spontaneously manufacture and use tools, without any contact with adults of their species or any prior demonstration by humans. This is an important step towards producing models of cultural transmission in this species and in animals in general.
