What makes the brain's tickers tock

Article Abstract:

Fisahn and colleagues have made observations in the CA3 region of the hippocampal slice, providing evidence that 40-Hz oscillations are due to a feedback-inhibition process. Oscillations can be prevented if the fast excitation of interneurons by pyramidal cells is blocked. Different results have been obtained by others in the CA1 region where oscillation continues when fast excitation is prevented. Draguhn and colleagues have provided information on the mechanism of 200-Hz oscillations and concluded that gap junctions between nearby axons cause synchronization.

Expanding the potential

Article Abstract:

Long-term potentiation (LTP) is related to the study of activity-dependent synaptic plasticity which forms the basis for learning and memorizing. Investigations have revealed that the underlying LTP mechanisms are activated during special types of learning and the obstruction of hippocampal LTP 'in vivo' is related to impairment of hippocampal-dependent learning.
