When good cholesterol turns bad

Article Abstract:

Pfizer's trial of its drug candidate torcetrapib, designed to increase levels of good cholesterol, was called off on December 2, 2006 because of the increased number of people who had died after taking the drug. Some specialists and experts were not surprised at the results as they had harbored doubts that certain ways of raising good cholesterol might cause more problems than they solve by promoting cardiovascular disease or raise blood pressure.

Antibiotic faces uncertain future

Article Abstract:

An antibiotic known as platensimycin is described which kills the deadly methicillin-resistant Staphyloccus aureus. Some microbiologists fear that the process of developing the drug is hugely expensive and the potential market for a new antibiotic, which is often used sparingly and administered for only a week or two, is small.
