The uses of strong and weak lenses

Article Abstract:

Gravitational lensing has enabled measurements of the galaxy-cluster mass distribution, distances to galaxies too faint for direct measurement and the cosmic shear due to large scale structure. Mass distribution measurements of galaxy clusters have resulted in the formation of high-multiplicity images of a background source, an indication that matter distribution in clusters is not smooth. Application of gravitational lensing to study the effect of large-scale structure on background sources may also shed new information on the initial conditions of the early universe.

Wide-angle lens

Article Abstract:

Multiple images of a quasar created by gravitational lensing were detected by Noashi Inada and team. This record of quasar has beaten the previous record whose angular separation across the sky stood at 6.3 arcseconds, the latest one being 14.62 arcseconds.
