Differing effects of cattle grazing on native and alien plants

Article Abstract:

Research on western US grasslands indicates that cattle grazing puts native plants at risk and promotes growth of invasive species. Recovery rates for native and introduced plants were compared under grazing conditions; findings show that alien species recovered more quickly than native species, perhaps due to an adaptation fostered by their lengthy history of use for grazing.

Edge-core effects and the effectiveness of traditional reserves in conservation: Eurasian badgers in Donana National Park

Article Abstract:

The effect of a traditional reserve (Donana National Park, southwestern Spain) on the Eurasian badger, a medium sized carnivore, is determined. The effect of the reserve was found to be positive and the edge effects in close proximity of the border were strong, reducing badger density even below the expected density outside the reserve.

Inclusion of native and alien species in temperate nature reserves: an historical study from Central Europe

Article Abstract:

Research on Czech Republic environmental management indicates that the early establishment of reserves reduces the likelihood of alien plant invasion within those reserves. Findings were obtained from plant data for 302 reserves dating from 1838.
