Wind speeds measured in the deep Jovian atmosphere by Galileo probe accelerometers

Article Abstract:

The winds below the cloud tops in Jupiter's atmosphere were measured using data from two accelerometers on the Galileo probe that descended to the planet. Analysis and interpolation of the data indicate two clearly distinct wind movements. One is a region of wind shear where wind speed increases sharply with depth and the other is a region of constant high-velocity winds. These findings agree with the determination of Jovian winds using Doppler tracking.

Pipelines to the planets

Article Abstract:

Research using the short wave spectrometer has measured the water vapour is present in the stratospheres of planets Jupiter, Titan and Uranus. The water vapour present in Earth's stratosphere is one thousand times more concentrated than that observed around the other planets. Evidence suggests that water vapour may originate from planetary rings in low latitudes. However, it may also come from comets.

Europa's oxygen atmosphere

Article Abstract:

A longstanding research on the atmosphere of the three outer galilean satellites of Jupiter, namely Europa, Ganymede and Callisto, reveals the presence of gaseous oxygen on Europa. The spectroscopic observations of Europa show two spectral features of atomic oxygen and indicate the gas pressure to be a mere 10(super -5) microbar.
