Winds of change

Article Abstract:

Hurricane forecasters have dramatically improved predictions of the paths that storms might follow, but it is not able to improve their overall long-range forecasts, without understanding the turbulence and the effects on a storm's intensity. Two studies have suggested that hurricanes might grow more intense in the future because of climate change, which means, millions of people who live-in vulnerable coastal areas would be at a greater risk than ever.

Creating the perfect wave

Article Abstract:

Kerry Black, a physical oceanographer, and his New Zealand-based company, ASR, are working with U.S. partners to construct the first wave pool purpose-built for surfing at Lori Wilson Park, near Cape Canaveral on Florida's east coast. Black's team is designing a new kind of wave pool specifically for surfers, as the artificial reefs also depend on the storms, winds and tides to create great waves that are suitable for surfers.
