Lost in translation

Article Abstract:

The faulty genes involved in the devastating effect of a genetic condition that destroys the brain's white matter help control the translation of RNA into protein, a vital aspect of human biology. Biologists are realizing that documenting how this control can break down should help to understand more about common diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer's and might one day provide new ways to treat them.

Parasite infiltrates fruitfly research

Article Abstract:

The laboratory test organism, fruitfly (Drosophila melanogaster) are found to be infected with a parasite, Wolbachia bacterium that affects the flies' biology. The findings suggest that the bacterium could be silently affecting the outcome of a large number of studies carried out by using the fruitfly.
