Xist has properties of the X-chromosome inactivation centre

Article Abstract:

X-chromosome inactivation is the process by which two-X-chromosomed female mammals achieve expression of X-chromosomal genes equivalent to that of single-X-and-single-Y-chromosomed males. The process results in the transcriptional silencing of almost all genes on one of the X chromosomes in female somatic cells. The Xist gene has been demonstrated to exhibit properties of the X-inactivation center. When introduced onto an autosome, Xist is sufficient by itself for inactivation in cis and that Xist ribonucleic acid becomes localized close to the autosome into which the gene is integrated.

Painters centre one eye in portraits

Article Abstract:

The importance of the eyes in revealing the personality of subjects of portraits has long been appreciated in art, and the centre of symmetry of the face often features in art analysis. Some portraits adhere to the principal that one eye is consistently centered horizontally in the canvas. Horizontal positions of the eyes were measured to quantify the link between eye position and the canvas frame. The analysis shows that exact compositional principles have been used with an unbiased accuracy of plus or minus 5% during the past six centuries.

Science moves to centre stage: Science is playing an increasing part in may decisions made by the UK Parliament, and probably in other legislation. What are the implications?

Article Abstract:

An analysis of questions, motions and debates in the British Parliament shows that the proportion related to science and technology has risen around sixfold over the past decade. Scientific knowledge plays an increasingly important part in political decision-making, and parliamentarians should be more willing to adopt procedures for receiving input direct from the general public.
