Building partnerships with zoos and aquariums

Article Abstract:

The US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and the American Zoo and Aquarium Assn (AZA) have been involved jointly in implementing conservation efforts for endangered species since the enactment of the Endangered Species Act in 1973. Both FWS and AZA know the value of preserving biodiversity and its importance as a public interest. The two organizations have made the transition from a species-based conservation approach to a larger strategy that includes ecosystems and habitat-based conservation.

AZA-zoos help save endangered birds of Micronesia

Article Abstract:

The Marianas Archipelago Rescue and Survey project has been launched in 1992 to preserve endangered bird species in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. It aims to conserve the Rota bridled white eye, 'Zosterops conspicllata;' the Mariana crow, 'Corvus kubaryi' and the Mariana fruit dove, 'Ptilinopsu roseicopilla' through captive population management. It also plans to make a historical avifaunal survey of the Mariana Islands.
