p14ARF links the tumour suppressors RB and p53

Article Abstract:

Most human cancer growth regulation is mediated by tumour-suppressor proteins retinoblastoma (RB). Loss of RB function results in abnormal proliferation linked to the deregulation of E2F transcription factors and leads to the activation of p53, which suppresses cell growth. It is now shown that E2F-1 has direct involvement in expression of the human tumour-suppressor protein p14ARF. A model is proposed whereby E2F-1 protects cells from oncogenic changes resulting in abnormal proliferation, by activating p14ARF.

Cracking the calcium entry code

Article Abstract:

An essential component that allows cells to regulate their intracellular calcium ions [Ca.sup.2+] concentration was reported. It was concluded that a protein called Orai1(encoded by human gene FLJ14466) is an essential component of the CRAC (for C[a.sup.2+] release activated C[a.sup.2+]) channel complex, by which calcium ions flow into cells.

Annotation: cancer: guarding the guardian

Article Abstract:

The diversity of cellular stresses that activate the 'guardian of the genome' -p53, raises the question of how these signals all converge on one protein. However, the convergence of recent evidence suggests that nucleoli are important in monitoring cellular stress.
