What are some of your earliest memories of food?
Article Abstract:
Some chefs grew up in households where cooking was an important activity and fresh ingredients were readily available, but others had families that did not cook. In some households, the men were welcome in the kitchen, but more traditional cultures, the kitchen was the domain of women. Most chefs believe that their mother's cooking still influences the work they do and the choices they make. One women notes that she favored Denny's and Twinkies over her mother's ethnic cooking.

Animal symbols at 'Ain Ghazal
Article Abstract:
Archeological experts referred to existing cuneiform texts to discover the functions of animal figurines in the Neolithic culture. They realized that the uniformly made figurines found in sites like 'Ain Ghazal were used for religious rites, to drive away evil and to counter bad omens. The practice of magic in 1st and 2nd century BC may have also required the use of animal figurines. The clay animals were disposed ofimmediately through burying or burning.

Rescuing an old dig
Article Abstract:
The excavation of the cemetery outside the Roman fort at Brougham, some 20 miles south of the western end of Hadrian's Wall, was done by a small team of government-sponsored excavators in 1967. The artifacts obtained from these excavations consist of Britain's best collection of third-century A.D. glass vessels, an unrivaled group of glossy, bright-red pottery, and thousands of burnt scraps from objects placed on funeral pyres.
