Raphael Patai (1910-1996)
Article Abstract:
Renowned writer Raphael Patai died on Jul. 20, 1996 but, as a further evidence of his diligence, left behind enough materials for the publication of two more books. Patai's fascination with cultures was evident in these last books which dealt with the crypto Jews in Meshhed, Iran and Arab folktales. In his lifetime, he edited 13 books and wrote more than 30 books. Patai was awarded the Tel Aviv municipality Bialik Price for his dissertation entitled, 'Water: A Study in Palestinian Geography and Folklore During the Biblical and the Mishnaic Periods.'

A tribute: Kenneth S. Goldstein
Article Abstract:
Kenneth S. Goldstein (1927-1995), record producer and public folklorist, recognized the importance of popular music as social record long before the academists did. He successfully combined record production and scholarship, two fields traditionally taken as completely opposites. His contributions to the folklorist discipline are varied and insightful, ranging from the blues revival as a racial political movement to the importance of album notes to the concept of sound recordings as artifacts and social documents.

Kenneth S. Goldstein (1927-1995)
Article Abstract:
Eminent folklorist Kenneth Goldstein passed away on Nov. 11, 1995, at the age of 68. Goldstein headed the Department of Folklore and Folklife at the University of Pennsylvania with a few interruptions for 20 years until his retirement in 1992. He was also the first recipient of a Ph.D in folklore ever awarded by the university. His lifelong pursuit involved searching for a method that would have turned the folklore fieldwork into his scientific laboratory.
