Violins and other voices: miscellaneous variations
Article Abstract:
Violin music occupies a prominent place in the 1994 Green Linnet compact disc collection. Thirteen out of 35 releases from this collection feature the work of Irish fiddlers, including Eileen Ivers, Martin Hayes, John Doherty and Frankie Gavin. Solo, duo and trio violin performances are recorded for posterity, due, in part, to the influence of Green Linnet Records founder Wendy Newton, who is a fan of Irish folk music. Analysis of the fiddle music and the biographical and historical information included in the collection reveal styles, trends, techniques and political influences on this genre.

Ancestor worship, mentorship, and neorevival: "spirits" in the artifacts
Article Abstract:
The 1994 Green Linnet catalog and album series feature revivals of 1960s and 1970s folk music from Ireland. These compact disc issues feature the music of such established artists as Jackie Daly, Seamus Ennis, John Dougherty and Hugh Gillespie. The Green Linnet collections represent contemporary renditions of their works as tributes to the original 'spirit' of Irish music, which was characterized as acoustic, spontaneous and rough. An analysis of its Celtic flavor and emphasis on mentorship is given.
