A new look for readers, not awards
Article Abstract:
The redesign of the Levittown, PA-based 'Bucks County Courier Times' was one of four moves adapted by the paper in order to check sliding circulation. The redesign, which met initial resistance from the publisher, included increasing the number of stories, better promotions and a new layout that would increase the paper's geographical reach but not its required staffing. The other steps that successfully addressed the circulation issue included additional pages, advertising and reporter reassignments.

The road to design independence
Article Abstract:
Small newspapers facing an identity crisis need to be individualistic and independent. A newspaper's personality is reflected in its design. The parameters of a small newspaper's design evolve from its content and technology usage. It needs talented personnel to focus on the contents and let the contents speak for the newspaper's stand. Smaller newspapers need not follow the trend of similar designing, as seen in larger newspapers.
