Client: Sol Kerzner, chairman of Sun International

Article Abstract:

Sun International chairman Sol Kerzner hired Wimberly Allison Tongand Goo (WATG) to design his Palace of the Lost City, based on his own researchand interviews. WATG employed a local team of laborers whom they trained in thenecessary skills for the construction of the palace. The architects faced some constraints due to the site's faraway location, the unavailability of some materials and cultural considerations. They solved these by developing their own manufacturing base and choosing design elements which were acceptable to the African tribes. The final design blended both American and African influences.

Client: MEXX International

Article Abstract:

Mexx Group B.V.'s Pres Rattan Chadha chose American architect Robert Stern because he wanted an international and Post-modern design for the company's office in Voorschoten, Netherlands. The project entailed the addition of a new building to a 150-year-old structure without marring the latter's historical character. Stern's design reflected the older building's character but also projected its own distinctive style. The skillfulintegration of local materials and custom design elements created a building reminiscent of Dutch Modernism. Chadha praised Stern's efficient handling of the project.

Client: D.M. Cho

Article Abstract:

D.M. Cho hired Wimberly Allison Tong and Goo (WAT&G) to design the Cheju Shilla Hotel because he felt that the American firm possessed the design and technological capabilities required for the project. WAT&G was able to communicate with Cho but the Koreanengineers' strict adherence to standard designs, the Koreans' rigid hierarchical structure and the Korean government's restrictions posed some problems for the company. WAT&G was able to overcome these constraints and successfully completed the project in 1990.
