Diary of a salaryman: how do the Japanese manage to integrate design so thoroughly into their companies?
Article Abstract:
Japanese employees have a work ethic very different from that of their western caricature. Employees do not have to work hard, as there is overstaffing, yet they are expected to work long hours. Management attitudes towards workers are more positive but having the same job for life means that the older employees become too conservative and lose their individuality. Long hours spent at the office limits their home life and explains the importance given by management to the interior design of their offices.

Keeping council
Article Abstract:
Ivor Owen, Director General of the Design Council, is concerned about the decline in the manufacturing industry, which it has predicted. He claims that industrialists have neglected design issues, although it accounts for 80% of the price of a product, but only 10% of its cost. He defends the council against criticisms such as the delay in selecting a chairman and that it lacks policies. One of the councils new policies is giving priority to regional design projects.
