Update: California Technical Bulletin 133
Article Abstract:
California Technical Bulletin 133 (CAL 133) has created controversy in the contract furnishings industry since it requires that all uphpolstered furniturebe subjected to a comprehensive fire test to reduce fire hazards. Its advocatesagree with the necessity of such tests but critics doubt its effectivity and point out its costliness and failure to address toxicity issues. Nevertheless, CAL 133 criteria remain in effect and hold designers and manufacturers liable for any specified non-compliant furnitures. This underscores the need to further analyze CAL 133's implications.

Personal environments: Johnson Controls' response to employee complaints about workstation comfort
Article Abstract:
Personal Environment (PE) products have been designed to suit individual workstation comfort needs, particularly that of temperature control. Two types of PE are available namely the Circulated Air System and the Supplied Air System equipped with a under-the-desk fan and telescoping ducts connected to desktop diffusers. The design enables individual users to adjust air temperature, air flow, under-desk radiant heat, task light level and background noise. A significant increase in employee productivity has been noted with the installation of these innovations.
